A landslide is one of many widespread natural or man-made disasters that can cause catastrophic consequences in the environment. Considering geographical patterns, some areas may be more prone to landslides than others. Soil characteristics, slope inclination, and vegetation cover often contain significant information to assess the risks of landslide development in the area. Georgia is a country with a complex terrain, which requires constant monitoring to avoid environmental hazards and risks. Climate change and forest fires have a major influence on the development of landslide hazards. When a landslide occurs near a populated area, major human and material losses are predicted, which can be avoided. Early warning systems are effectively used in various developed countries to prevent human and infrastructure damage. Such monitoring systems are composed of satellite data, sensors, and a mathematical model that largely depends on rainfall and other environmental patterns. It is important to identify landslide-prone areas in Georgia and implement early warning systems in order to minimize human and material losses in the future. The seminar will signify the importance of a system that will play a vital role in landslide risks and hazards management in Georgia.
